Owners Club member helps teachers in Uganda

August 01, 2009

We would like to congratulate Coachman Owners Club member, Nicola Hitchen, on her recent expedition to Uganda. Nicola set off from Halifax on the 26th July for a three week trip, where she helped to build sleeping accommodation for teachers in a small village.

Ugandan teachers quite often live and work in different villages that are located long distances apart, so cannot return home after a hard days work during the week. Nicola raised £3000 to make the trip which saw her learn how to plaster walls, lay floors and paint properly.

At the end of the project, the locals threw a party for the team of 16 volunteers, where Nicola had the opportunity to play Ugandan games and eat traditional Ugandan food -which included goat with intestines and lungs!

In addition to helping the local community, Nicola and her team members visited the national park at Ishasha. She went on Safari and saw cubs, elephants, baboons, warthogs and a lion. Nicola had the trip of a lifetime, as she explains: “I enjoyed my time in Uganda and would like to thank everybody that helped me fundraise.”
